What To Do If You’re Audited

If you’re one of the unlucky ones, your business may have been audited. All this means is that you need to submit paperwork and proof of filing. The below tasks, with the help of a bookkeeper, will ensure this unfortunate time goes smoothly (assuming you filed everything properly!).

  1. Don’t panic. Just because you received a notice it doesn’t mean you did anything wrong.
  2. Organize what you have. Compile all the documents requested or contact whoever did your taxes so they can do so.
  3. Watch what you say. If you aren’t used to dealing with the IRS, let your CPA do the talking since they know the language and how to present items.
  4. Don’t be afraid to negotiate. You can appeal anything you disagree with to the Office of Appeals.

If you have a bookkeeper, there is nothing to worry about! Your files will be documented, organized, and ready when the situation arises.
